The 1999 English Base Set came in three print runs, and the difference between them can mean a 10x swing in value on the exact same card. Confusing them is the most expensive mistake a new vintage buyer can make. Here's how to tell 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited apart at a glance.
The Three Runs, In Order Of Scarcity
1st Edition came first and is the rarest and most valuable. It's identified by the "1st Edition" stamp — a small circular badge on the left side of the card below the artwork. Fewer were printed, and demand is fierce, so 1st Edition holos command the highest prices in the set.
Shadowless is the second run. It has no 1st Edition stamp, but it's still noticeably scarcer than Unlimited. Its defining trait is in the name: it lacks the drop-shadow that appears to the right of the card's picture box on later cards.
Unlimited is the third and by far the most common run, printed in huge quantities. It has the drop-shadow behind the art box and no 1st Edition stamp. Most Base Set cards you'll encounter are Unlimited.
How To Tell Shadowless From Unlimited
This is the trickiest distinction because neither has a stamp. Three tells:
1. The drop-shadow. Look at the right and bottom edge of the picture box. Unlimited cards have a subtle grey shadow there, as if the art window is floating above the card. Shadowless cards don't — the box sits flat.
2. The fonts. Shadowless cards have thinner, lighter HP and attack text. Once you've compared the two side by side, the weight difference is obvious.
3. The color. Shadowless cards tend to run slightly lighter and less saturated, with the health-point number often positioned marginally differently.

Why The Differences Drive Value
Scarcity plus demand. 1st Edition and Shadowless were printed briefly before Wizards of the Coast switched to the mass-produced Unlimited run, so far fewer survive — and vintage collectors specifically chase the earliest printings. The Shadowless Charizard is the crown jewel of the set, but every Shadowless holo carries a meaningful premium over its Unlimited twin, and 1st Edition sits higher still.
A Buyer's Checklist
Before you pay a 1st Edition or Shadowless premium, confirm: (1) a clearly photographed 1st Edition stamp or the absent drop-shadow plus thin fonts, (2) honest condition photos under real light, and (3) a seller who labels the print run explicitly. We verify and clearly label every Base Set card as 1st Edition, Shadowless, or Unlimited, and back every sale with buyer protection.
