The name says it: Shadowless cards lack the drop-shadow along the right and bottom edge of the card's picture box that appears on the later Unlimited print. Look for a few more tells — Shadowless cards have thinner, lighter fonts in the HP and attack text, slightly different coloring, and no shadow behind the art window. Hold a Shadowless and an Unlimited side by side once and you'll never mistake them again.
Shadowless was printed only briefly before Wizards of the Coast switched to the shadowed Unlimited run, so far fewer exist. That scarcity, combined with its status as one of the first English Pokémon print runs, makes Shadowless a cornerstone of vintage collecting. The Shadowless Base Set Charizard is the crown jewel, but every Shadowless holo — Blastoise, Venusaur, Zapdos, Mewtwo — carries a meaningful premium over its Unlimited twin.
Base Set came in three flavors, in order of scarcity and value: 1st Edition (with the "1st Edition" stamp, the rarest and priciest), Shadowless (no stamp, no drop-shadow — the second run), and Unlimited (with the drop-shadow, by far the most common).
